It was inaugurated on 14 September 2007 by Dr. G. Madhavan Nair, the then Chairman ISRO.IIST is sponsored by the Indian
Space Research Organisation (ISRO) under Department of Space, Government of India.
Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, former President of India, is the Chancellor of IIST.
The institute offers the following academic programmes:
1.Undergraduate Programmes (4 years):
1.B.Tech. (Physical Sciences)
2.B.Tech. (Aerospace Engineering)
3.B.Tech. (Avionics)
Upon successfully completing the course the students are absorbed in ISRO as a research scientist/engineer .
The duration of the bond is 5 years and the worth of bond is 10 lakh .
